Mitigation and ventilation improvements at Sanford Middle School and Sanford Pride Elementary School are continuing to show results, Superintendent Matt Nelson told School Committee members at the May 5 meeting.
The update followed discussions in April about efforts to address concerns at both schools. Nelson said the work has led to significantly improved radon readings.
At the Middle School, readings are well below the recommended thresholds following the restoration of the school’s mitigation systems. The district is working with its HVAC company to accelerate upgrades serving the gym and weight room, with installation of new equipment expected to begin in June.
At Pride Elementary School, the district has continued to address all identified areas of concern. During April vacation, mitigation systems were installed in the music room, music storage room and office areas on the building’s lower level. Seven-day monitoring cycles are now underway in those spaces, with early results described as very promising.
A new HVAC upgrade for the pre-K and kindergarten area is expected to be installed within the next few weeks. A crane company will be needed to place the rooftop unit. Monitoring of radon levels and equipment performance will continue as the work progresses.
Nelson expressed appreciation to the Sanford Schools’ facilities team and professionals the district partnered with for their work on the upgrades.
Radon is a naturally occurring gas that can enter buildings through cracks or other openings. Prolonged exposure poses a risk of lung cancer.
