Keeping Pets Safe in the Heat

As summer approaches and temperatures begin to climb, it’s important to remember that it is never safe to leave an animal in a parked vehicle. A car’s interior temperature can quickly climb to a dangerous level within minutes, even on a mild day, potentially causing heatstroke and death. This rule applies even if it’s just for a short time, the air conditioning is running, or the windows are cracked.

Leaving pets outside on hot days can also lead to overheating. It’s important to remember that dog breeds with flat faces, such as bulldogs and pugs, are particularly vulnerable to heatstroke. If you’re ever in doubt, it’s always safer to let your pet stay cool and comfy inside.

Taking a few simple precautions can keep your four-legged friends safe outside during warm weather:

  • Hydration and shade: Make sure your pet always has access to a fresh, cool bowl of water as well as shade. Also, watch for signs of heat stress, including heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, dark-colored gums, a rapid heart rate, vomiting, or signs of weakness. If you notice any of these symptoms, move your pet to a cooler area and contact your veterinarian immediately.
  • Exercise: Limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day. Instead, take your dog for walks in early morning or late evening when it’s cooler.
  • Paw care: Be mindful of your pet’s paws on hot surfaces such as concrete and pavement. Always check pavement temperatures before walking; if it’s too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. Stick to cooler surfaces instead.
  • Sun protection: Dogs can get sunburned, too. This is especially true for those with short hair, white fur, and pink skin. Your veterinarian will be happy to recommend some pet-safe sunscreen options.

If you notice an animal that has been left in a hot car, do not break windows or damage the car. Call the police department for assistance.
