The musical “Nunsense” is making its comeback on the Nasson Little Theatre stage this weekend and will continue through the last two weekends of July.
The show debuted at Nasson in the summer of 2022, at the beginning of the theater program’s revival in Springvale, according to technical director and lighting and sound engineer Dave Parent. Four of the original cast members from that show have returned to reprise their roles as the Little Sisters of Hoboken alongside four new faces.
Many talented members of our community and beyond will be featured in this production, such as Gwendolyn Benoit as Sister Mary Regina (Mother Superior), Cat Mathews as Sister Mary Hubert (Mistress of Novices), Kaitlyn Hubert as Sister Robert Anne, Josie Lynn Perkins as Sister Mary Amnesia, Emma Stevens as Sister Mary Leo, and Laci Willette, Anberlyn Hubert, and Bryn Rice as the schoolgirls of Mt. Saint Helen’s.
“This is comedy of the absurd!” exclaimed returning director George Perkins. “There’s no great, wonderful, hidden secret meaning, it’s just comedy for the sake of comedy. You get a lot of laughs, and it’s fun to do. These girls are having the best time of their lives.”
Perkins believes that with these five women, audiences will see five very different characters. “I have probably as good a talented group as you ever have in community theater,” he said. “Usually, you would find this level at least at rep or semi-pro theater.”
The work done by those behind the curtains is equally important, Perkins explained. “It’s a whole lot of people. There are more people to make a show happen than there are people on stage.” This includes “the stage manager who’s made every rehearsal, who has to call the entire show. Nobody talks about the tech like Dave [Parent].” He went on to state that it’s truly the volunteers that make these shows happen, and that the program at Nasson Community Center stresses the importance of teaching this work to kids, so that they may go on to keep the theater running for many years to come.
Perkins gave a special shoutout to his daughter Josie Lynn Perkins, who has been working hard both on the stage and as his assistant director. “She’s as or more capable of directing than I am because she’s trained to do it,” he said. He feels that future productions at this theater will be in good hands with her.
This will be Perkins’ sixth time directing “Nunsense.” When asked why, he said the show is just fun. “Audiences love it, and this type of show is purely to entertain an audience.”
“If you want to laugh,” he concluded, “come here!”
“Nunsense” will run for two evening shows at 7 pm and one Sunday matinee show at 2 pm this weekend and next. The performance lasts about two hours with a brief intermission between acts.
Tickets are now on sale online on the Nasson Community Center website (https://events.ticketleap.com/tickets/nassonevents/nunsense-the-musical-1486208911) as well as at the door a half hour before the show. Tickets are $20.38 for adults and $16.30 for children 17 and under as well as seniors over 65.
