Business-minded students earn scholarships: Two students in the Academy of Business program at Sanford Regional Technical Center were awarded scholarships by the Sanford Springvale Chamber of Commerce last week. The awards were based on a semester-long business project that each recipient completed. Board members of the Chamber judged the projects.
Esme Gori won the Lighthouse Credit Union Scholarship on behalf of the Chamber with a final project on “Clearpath Diabetes.” In the fall, Gori will attend Coastal Carolina University to study business marketing. Ethan Waddell received the Chamber’s Faith Ballenger Memorial Scholarship for his final project, titled “Slick ‘n’ Shine Car Wash.” Waddell will study finance and accounting at the University of Maine in Orono. Both students are graduates of Marshwood High School.
The Stuff the Bus date is set: Once August rolls around, thoughts turn to the start of the school year. To help get kids excited and prepared to go back to school, Stuff the Bus Maine will again be distributing school supplies. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 22, at Curtis Lake Church, 38 Westview Drive in Sanford. No pre-registration is needed. Before arriving, parents/guardians are asked to fill out a separate index card for each child. At the top of the index card, write your name. Below your name, print the first and last name of your child along with the grade they will enter in the fall.
Arrival times are based on the first letter of the child’s last name: A – G arrives at 10:30 am; H – M arrives at 10 am; N – S arrives at 9 am; and T – Z arrives at 11 am. If there are children in one family with multiple last names, use the last name of the youngest school-aged child to determine when to arrive. Anyone attending without a child present should arrive at 11:30 am and a volunteer will help gather supplies. For an efficient distribution, organizers ask that people do not arrive before their designated time. The event will run as long as supplies last.
Student scholarship winner eyes a green future: Ryan Alexander, a 2026 graduate of Sanford High School, was recently awarded the inaugural 2026 Sanford Green Futures Scholarship. Alexander will attend Southern Maine Community College in the fall where he will study Electrical Engineering Technologies and play basketball. At SHS, Alexander was a team captain, a multi-sport varsity athlete, and an SMAA Honorable Mention honoree. The Green Futures Scholarship supports students preparing for careers in renewable energy, sustainability, energy efficiency, electrical technology, HVAC, and other green energy fields. The program was funded by Walden Renewables through its community benefit agreement with Sanford.
